THE NUMBERS HAVE A BASIS
Density, moisture, and rounding
Each built-in species uses USDA Forest Products Laboratory specific gravity from Wood Handbook Table 5–3a, with green moisture content from Table 4–1. Dry means 12% moisture content; green uses the published heartwood or sapwood basis shown in the support table.
How weight is calculated
Volume = actual thickness × width × length × quantity. Density in kg/m³ = specific gravity × 1,000 × (1 + moisture content ÷ 100). Weight in kg = volume in m³ × density.
Dry density uses G12 and 12% MC. Green density uses Gb and the listed green MC. These are two equal-volume reference scenarios: each assumes the entered dimensions apply at that condition. This tool does not model shrinkage of the same board during drying.
Display precision is not accuracy
Weights and densities display up to two decimal places; volume displays up to six; board feet display up to three. All row totals are added before display rounding. Unrounded values are used for calculations and CSV exports.
Species averages do not predict a particular board exactly. Do not use these estimates as a certified scale reading, lifting limit, vehicle-load approval, or structural design value.
Supported species and published inputs
This first release supports only the verified species below. Generic hardwood groups, unlisted species, treatment additions, and engineered products have no built-in preset. No substitute species is chosen automatically.
The table includes the complete species roster from Table 5–3a, combining each species' Green and 12% entries into one row. Not listed means the source has no value or Table 4–1 has no matching name. Only rows with Gb, G12, and matching green MC are selectable; other rows are reference-only and must use custom supplier density. Names are matched without substituting a general group for a named subtype. The Green MC column shows the calculation basis; both published tissue values are also shown when matched.

Units and dimensions
International inch = 0.0254 m; foot = 0.3048 m; yard = 0.9144 m; pound = 0.45359237 kg. A board foot is 144 cubic inches. Dimensions may be entered in mm, cm, m, in, ft, or yd. Results include weight, cubic metres, cubic feet, and board feet.
Board-feet mode accepts volume directly. It cannot recover nominal dimensions or correct a supplier's tally. Dimensions mode uses exactly the measurements you enter; there is no hidden nominal-to-actual adjustment.
Custom product density
Custom density mode uses a density you provide in kg/m³ or lb/ft³. Its result is a separate entered-density total, not a USDA dry or green result. Record the supplier's source and moisture basis in the row description. Custom density is not extrapolated to another moisture condition.

Wood weight calculator questions
Can I use this as a hardwood weight calculator?
Yes, for the named hardwood species in the published support table. The timber weight calculator and wood beam weight calculator modes use the same volume method for rectangular stock, not a strength or span calculation.
Does this work as a dimensional lumber weight calculator?
Enter actual measured dimensions and choose the exact supported species. A nominal size label alone is not enough. Use the wood weight calculator kg setting or change the result unit to pounds.
Can I use it as a plywood weight calculator?
Only in custom density mode with a manufacturer or supplier density for the specific panel. There is no generic plywood preset: veneers, glue, grade, and product construction differ. This release has no verified built-in panel or engineered-wood product data.
Is this a pressure treated lumber weight calculator?
Neither the pressure treated lumber weight calculator nor treated lumber weight calculator use case has a built-in treatment preset here. Use custom density only when your supplier supplies a suitable density and moisture basis. Untreated species averages do not account for retained treatment chemicals.
What does the green lumber weight calculator result mean?
It is a reference estimate using the listed species and published green moisture basis. Your wet lumber may have a different moisture content. The dry and green figures are not an uncertainty interval or measured limits.
Can I calculate several sizes at once?
Add a row for each size or species. Same-size pieces use the quantity field. Mixed lists are summed without rounding individual rows first. Custom-density rows remain separate from the dry and green totals.
