What this lumber calculator does
This page is for a single, uniform lumber item: for example, ten boards of the same thickness, width, and length. It provides both linear footage for count-based planning and board footage for lumber sold by volume. Add each different size as a separate calculation.
How the totals are calculated
Total linear feet equals length in feet × number of pieces. Board feet per piece equals thickness in inches × width in inches × length in feet ÷ 12. The total board feet is that result × number of pieces. When you enter a price per board foot, the estimate is total board feet × that price.
Use the dimensions and pricing convention supplied by your lumber seller. Nominal and actual dimensions can differ, and this calculator does not change one into the other.
Before you order lumber
- Check whether your list uses nominal dimensions or measured dimensions.
- Count cuts and project-specific extras separately; this page does not choose a waste allowance.
- Confirm availability, grade, length increments, delivery, taxes, and seller pricing with the supplier.
- For a mixed list, calculate each size separately and combine the results in your purchase list.
Lumber calculator questions
What is the difference between linear feet and board feet?
Linear feet measure length only. Board feet measure volume using thickness, width, and length.
Can this calculate several board sizes at once?
No. It deliberately calculates one uniform size at a time so the inputs and result remain easy to check. Run another calculation for each additional size.
Where can I calculate several boards in a list?
Use the board foot calculator for its multi-row board entry workflow.
